I use an awl when I'm covering snaps (to make an opening for the male part of the snap), and this tool makes the job effortless. But it has another use, too - a lot of sewers use at the sewing machine, it to control the fabric just as it goes under the presser foot - it's safer and more efficient than using your fingers!
