With its trapeze shape, the Vintage Evening Coat is a beautifully flattering garment that is comfortable to wear and goes together easily. The design details, such as front neckline darts, long shoulder darts, a pleat at the center back, and a beautiful welt pocket treatment add sophistication and subtle interest.

The band collar sits cleanly and elegantly just below the neckline and the center front closes with snaps or buttonholes. The sleeves can be cut on the bias or the straight of grain and the coat is fully lined.

I first came upon the coat when a friend was cleaning out her vintage garments.  I tried it on, loved it, and knew that not only would it be wonderful to have, it would make a beautiful pattern.  So that's what we've done, thanks to the brilliant patternmaking by Julien Cristofoli in Paris.  We explore creating a beautiful welt pocket treatment, a very clever collar, and a first-rate method of making beautiful bound buttonholes to add to your repertoire of couture techniques

Susan Khalje is a couture sewing expert and educator with over 35-years of experience. She was awarded with The Association of Sewing and Design Professionals’ Lifetime Achievement Award. Susan established The Couture Sewing School in order to teach others around the world. Aside from establishing The Couture Sewing School, Susan has also published numerous of books like Bridal Couture: Fine Sewing Techniques for Wedding Gowns and Evening Wear (Krause) and Linen and Cotton: Classic Sewing Techniques (Taunton)which are the best sellers.
